Intent

Ensure all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Implementation

Music at New Bolsover is taught by class teachers using the Kapow Music Scheme. Children sing in assembly and at events for special occasions.

In Year 4, all children learn to play a musical instrument, taught by specially trained teachers as part of the National Plan for Music Education. This year the children are learning how to play the ukelele.

The Kapow Scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum.

In line with the curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, this Scheme moves away from the previous levels and learning objective/outcome concepts to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning.

Ofsted have stated that “We will not always know the learning outcomes” so segregated learning objectives at the start of each lesson are not appropriate. Instead the interrelated dimensions of music weave through the units to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, differing musical activities (including creating and exploring) and performing.

Impact

Pupils develop a love and appreciation of music.

Pupils develop the skills of:

  • Listening and Appraising
  • Singing

Wider music opportunities

Last year there were lots of different music opportunities for the children. Over Christmas time the whole school learned some carols which were performed during a whole school concert at the local church. Some children joined a handbell club where they learned to read some simple music as part of an ensemble. They then performed these to the whole school and parents at our carol concert and then they visited the local care home to perform some songs to the residents. The children in Year 3 also visited the local care home to perform some Christmas carols to the residents.

Last year, Year 4s learned to play the ukelele and they had the opportunity to perform to the school, parents and to play with the Halle Orchestra!
